The LeftWords Festival of Books and Ideas began in Toronto in 1999 to celebrate and promote the work of progressive Canadian and international writers and thinkers whose works appear in books and magazines by Canadian independent publishers. LeftWords was a one day event and featured speakers as well as a exhibition by independent book publishers, bookstore and magazines.
LeftWords was held annually at various venues in Toronto before going on hiatus in 2005. The festival returned to Toronto at the Ryerson campus in 2012 and again in 2013. Over the years author that have appeared include Judy Rebick, Sam Gindin, Michelle Landsberg, Francis Fox Piven, Emily Pohl-Weary, Michael Riordon, Franke James, Jeet Heer, David McNally, and many, many more great authors.
